Australia joins mineral Security Partnership

2022-07-18

According to MiningWeekly, Australia has joined the Mineral Security Partnership to seek to build and protect key mineral supply chains that are critical to clean energy technologies and the global transition to clean energy.
The so-called mineral security partnership, which Australia just joined, includes the United States, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Britain and the European Union.
Australia's trade and tourism minister tang, ferrell (Don Farrell) said, "the United States play a strong leadership position in the new partnership, to help member countries and in our region and other major markets around the world, Australia into the international key mineral supply chain is very important to the global economy and technology".
"The aim of the partnership is to promote public and private capital investment in mining, smelting and recycling projects, subject to strict compliance with environmental, social and governance standards".
Madeleine King, Australia's Minister for Resources and North Australia, held bilateral talks with Jennifer Granholm, US Secretary of Energy, on the importance of key minerals to the clean energy transition and new battery, solar panel and electric vehicle technologies. The paper also discussed how to strengthen cooperation in key mineral resources.

"My discussions with Secretary Granholm were very constructive and we emphasized our joint efforts to strengthen the development of key minerals and diversify the global supply chain," King said.

"Both sides agree that the continued safe supply of key minerals is essential for modern renewable technologies that can ultimately help our countries and the world achieve net zero emissions."

As a cornerstone of clean energy technologies, key minerals are integral to the shared climate goals of the United States and Australia, and building a more diverse and accountable supply chain is a priority to strengthen cooperation, Granholm added.
"I am pleased to have had productive talks with Minister King and Australian industry on how to leverage our technological and resource strengths," she added.
King and Granholm agreed that officials from both countries would consult over the next three months on how to further implement the recently signed Australia-U.S. Partnership for Net Zero Technology Advancement.
Ferrell, King and Granholm also attended the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Australia's Arafura Resources and GENERAL Electric.
Under the memorandum, GE will further negotiate the purchase of rare earth materials for wind turbines from Arafula's Norris project in the Northern Territory.
