In 2027, Argentina's lithium production will rank third in the world

2023-09-23

According to Mining.com, the analysis believes that thanks to three mines in production and 38 projects under development, Argentina, the fastest growing country in lithium production, is expected to become the world's third largest lithium producer in 2027.
Marcelo Bolton, a consultant to the mining and metals industry at the British Commodity Research Institute (CRU), recently said at the Lithium Forum in Chile that production in Argentina, after Australia, Chile and China, will increase from the current 34,000 tons (lithium carbonate equivalent, LCE) to 260,000 tons in 2027.
However, to attract more investors to the sector, the foreign investment environment must improve, Bolton said. A good place to start, he noted, would be to "normalize" exchange rates to avoid the problem of dollar-denominated imports and exports of goods and services.
CRU forecasts that 18 lithium projects will be put into production in Argentina in the next four years. The consultancy said the project most likely to come on stream on time was Zijin Mining's Tres Quebradas, The Echeman-Aoyama partnership includes Centenario-Ratones, Ganfeng-Lithium Americas' Cauchari-Olaroz and Posco's Sal de Oro project.
Before the end of the year, Argentina's lithium industry will be greatly developed, because the country's current three lithium companies Livent Corp and Allkem are expected to achieve a merger. The combined company would be the world's third-largest by annual output and fifth by market capitalisation.
Ganfeng-american Lithium Co. 's Kosari-Olaros project lithium in June, but it has not yet reached full production.
According to the annual output of 200,000 tons of lithium carbonate, by 2025, Argentina's exports of lithium, a battery metal, will reach $5.6 billion.
Argentina is part of the "lithium Triangle," a region of salt lakes and white salt marshes where Chile, Argentina and Bolivia meet.
More than half of the world's lithium reserves have been found in the region. (Global Geological and Mineral Information System).
